Military veterans who completed heroic missions for their country are now preparing to serve as heroes once again, this time to kids in need at Christmas.AMVETS Post 72 will host a Kids Christmas Party on Dec. 16, open to children of families in need from the local New Haven community. The party will begin at noon at AMVETS Post 72, located at 57581 AMVETS Drive in New Haven. No registration is required to attend.“We usually see about 30 to 40 people at our Kids Christmas Party, 20 of those are usually kids,” AMVETS Post 72 Commander Jim Wood said.Hell’s Our Home Detroit Motorcycle Club organized a toy collection for toy distribution at AMVETS Post 72’s Dec. 16 party. The Toys for Kids drive took place on Dec. 2 at the motorcycle club’s Roseville base. The public was invited to attend the event and bring a new unwrapped toy for a child up to age 12 or a $10 donation.“Monetary donations are absolutely accepted. The monetary donations can either be dropped off at AMVETS Post 72 in New Haven or they can be dropped off the day of the toy drive at HoH MC,” Wood said.Wood said the Hell’s Our Home Detroit Motorcycle Club will provide the toys and money donated on Dec. 2 to the AMVETS prior to Dec. 16 so AMVETS members can shop for any additional toys needed with the donated money. The motorcycle club’s toy drive for donation to AMVETS is a longstanding tradition, Wood said.“HoH MC began their toy drive over 20 years ago and decided to donate all proceeds and toys to AMVETS Post 72,” Wood said. “The reason HoH decided to partner up with AMVETS Post 72 is because most MC members are veterans and they wanted to make sure kids in the community received a gift at Christmas,” Wood said.Santa Claus will be at the AMVETS Post 72 Kids Christmas Party to distribute the gifts to children in need from the New Haven area. Wood said dining and a holiday movie will also be included in the event.“We will have about six AMVET volunteers on hand that day, the things that they will be performing are ensuring the right aged present is matched with the age of the child receiving the present,” Wood said. “They will also be preparing a light luncheon for those in attendance.”Community members interested volunteering at the event can contact an AMVETS member, Wood said. The post can be reached at 586-749-5201.
